Flounder fishing just got a whole lot easier — if you’re using the right rig. The Carolina rig, a tried-and-true setup, is one of the most effective ways to land these bottom-dwelling fish, especially when using live bait like mud minnows or finger mullet. VA Outdoors recently published a guide detailing why the Carolina rig is a must-have for any flounder angler and how to make the most of it in coastal waters.

Building the Perfect Carolina Rig

Flounder, prized both for their fight and flavor, are a staple target for inshore anglers. As temperatures rise, they can be found in various environments, from inshore wrecks to tidal creeks and flats. The Carolina rig shines in these conditions because it keeps bait near the bottom, right where flounder like to ambush their prey. According to VA Outdoors, “Flounder will move up into the water column to prey on baits…but in tidal creeks and flats they spend more time on the bottom.”

A Carolina rig consists of just a few simple components: an egg sinker, a barrel swivel, a short leader, and a bait hook. This streamlined setup allows for easy rigging and minimal expense, which is important because, as any seasoned angler knows, fishing around structure means losing gear to snags. VA Outdoors points out that pre-rigged versions are available but often come with heavy leaders that may not suit all fishing styles.

Where and How to Fish It

Location is key to flounder fishing success, and anglers should target spots with strong currents, such as creek mouths, bridge pilings, and inshore reefs. Flounder are ambush predators, waiting in deeper channels and along structure for baitfish to drift their way. The Carolina rig, when properly fished, keeps bait in the strike zone, increasing the chances of a hookup.

Whether you’re fishing from a boat, kayak, or the shoreline, mastering the Carolina rig can significantly boost your flounder haul. To dive deeper into this technique, check out the full guide from VA Outdoors and get ready to reel in some serious catches this season!
