Located within the Gulf Islands National Seashore, Fort Pickens offers campers the perfect escape into nature, blending history, recreation, and some stunning views. Whether you’re here for a short weekend trip or a weeklong outdoor retreat, there are plenty of things to do around the Fort Pickens campground.

Explore the Historic Fort Pickens

You can’t visit Fort Pickens without taking a tour of the actual fort itself. Built in the early 1800s to defend Pensacola Bay, Fort Pickens played a significant role during the Civil War. Walking through the fort feels like stepping back in time, with cannons still standing guard, tunnels to explore, and enough history to fill a few library books.

Fun fact: Fort Pickens once housed the famous Apache leader Geronimo.

Hit the Beach

After you’ve had your fill of history, unwind at one of the beaches just a stone’s throw away from the campground. White sands and emerald waters offer the perfect backdrop for swimming, sunbathing, or building the world’s most epic sandcastle. And if you’re lucky, you might spot a pod of dolphins playing in the surf.

Fishing at Fort Pickens

The waters around Fort Pickens are perfect for anglers. You’ll find ample opportunities to reel in some local favorites like snapper, flounder and redfish. Don’t have a boat? No problem — there is a fishing pier nearby, perfect for catching dinner. And if the fish aren’t biting, well, there’s always that sandwich you packed earlier, right?

Hiking and Wildlife Watching at Fort Pickens

For those who prefer to stay on land, the campground offers access to several hiking trails that wind through the sand dunes and coastal forests. Keep your eyes peeled for native wildlife — armadillos, osprey, and even the occasional sea turtle might make an appearance. And speaking of wildlife, Fort Pickens is great for bird watching. During migration season the skies are filled with colorful feathered travelers.

Campfire Stories and Stargazing

When you go camping at Fort Pickens and the sun dips below the horizon, gather around the campfire with your friends and family to swap stories or roast marshmallows under the night sky. With little light pollution, the stars shine extra bright here. Who knows? You might even catch a glimpse of a shooting star.

Whether you’re here for the history, the fishing, or just to relax by the beach, Fort Pickens has something for everyone; so, pack your tent, bring your sunscreen, and get ready for a camping trip you won’t forget.
