For those up for a more strenuous hike with a 1,700-elevation gain, the Jakes Creek Trail leads to breathtaking views of the Smokies. 

Ghost Town? More Like a History Buff’s Dream 

Elkmont isn’t just about the trails; it’s also home to the Elkmont Historic District, a ghost town that was once a bustling logging community. Walking through the remnants of old cottages and abandoned buildings, you’ll feel like you’re in an old spaghetti western before a showdown — who knows, you might even get a chance at seeing the Pale Rider in action. 

The historic Spence Cabin, lovingly restored, gives visitors a peek into the luxurious summer retreats of the early 1900s. It’s even open for reservation for all sorts of events — if you know someone who’s looking for a rustic wedding tell them to look no further.

Synchronous Fireflies: Nature’s Light Show 

If you visit in late May or early June, you’re in for a dazzling display of nature’s own light show. The synchronous fireflies flash in unison, creating a mesmerizing experience that draws people from all over the world. Imagine twinkling lights surrounding you as if you’re in some enchanted forest 

Fishing in the Little River 

Fishing enthusiasts, rejoice! The Little River, which winds its way through Elkmont, is a great spot for casting a line. It’s home to an abundance of rainbow trout, so if you’re patient, you might just land a big one. 

Camping at Elkmont: Sleep Under the Stars

For those who prefer a night under the stars, the Elkmont Campground offers a rustic yet comfortable camping experience. Fall asleep to the sound of the river, wake up with a view of the mountains; maybe discover that your tent isn’t as easy to set up as you thought, just like me this past summer when I finally upgraded after all these years.
