If you can’t wait for the weekend to get back into nature, then Davidson River in North Carolina should be at the top of your list. The river is in the heart of Pisgah National Forest and offers some of the best outdoor activities in the state. Whether you’re an angler, hiker, or swimmer, there’s something for everyone; so, pack your gear and get ready for a memorable time.
Let’s start with one of the river’s biggest draws: fishing. Davidson River is famous for its rainbow, brown, and brook trout. You might want to brush up on your casting skills before you arrive though — these trout are famously clever.
Don’t be discouraged if the fish give you the slip. As any seasoned angler knows, the best part of fishing isn’t necessarily catching fish — it’s about standing in the cool river, surrounded by towering trees, and being at peace with nature.
Not into fishing? No problem. Davidson River also offers plenty of trails for hiking, biking, and wandering aimlessly while pretending to know where you are. The Art Loeb Trail is a popular choice. It’s about 30 miles long and offers jaw-dropping views of the Appalachian Mountains; but, if you’re not up for a multi-day trek, you can also find shorter loops.
If you enjoy waterfalls, you’ll love the nearby Looking Glass Falls. Just a short drive from Davidson River, this waterfall is one of the most photographed waterfalls in the entire eastern United States!
Camping at Davidson River
For those who want to extend their stay, there are great camping options along Davidson River. Whether you prefer pitching a tent, pulling up in an RV, or glamping with every modern convenience (we won’t judge), there’s a spot for you.
If you prefer getting up close and personal with the water, why not try tubing or kayaking? On a warm day, floating at the Davidson River Recreation Area in a dream come true. Grab a tube, throw on some sunscreen, and let the current do all the work while you bask in the beauty of Pisgah National Forest. Kayaking is another great option for those who want a little more control over where they end up — just be prepared for a workout as you paddle through the gentle rapids.
Davidson River is great year-round, but the best times to visit are during spring and fall. In the spring, wildflowers bloom along the trails, while fall brings a stunning display of foliage. Plus, the cooler temperatures make it perfect for all the outdoor activities you’ll want to pack in during your trip. Of course, if the main draw is swimming in the sun, then you should consider visiting during summer — just be sure not to go when it’s too hot outside!
Whether you’re casting a line, hiking to new heights, or going for a river ride, Davidson River offers a refreshing escape from everyday life. With so many activities to choose from, it’s impossible to have a dull moment. The next time you want to spend some quality time outdoors, head to Davidson River and let nature take care of the rest.
