Off the coast of Maine lies an awesome natural wonder, and the only place on the East Coast where you can see the ocean from a mountain peak. Acadia National Park is the most beautiful place I’ve ever visited and I want to share it with you today, so that you can hopefully visit soon. It is one of the greatest national parks in the country and has a plethora of activities suitable for all types of outdoorsman; Whether you’re seeking the thrill of hiking challenging trails, the serenity of watching waves crash against granite cliffs, or the breathtaking views from mountain peaks, Acadia has it all. For an unforgettable experience for Acadia National Park camping, focus your visit on Thunder Hole, Beehive Loop, and Cadillac Mountain.

Acadia National Park Camping: Top Attractions

Thunder Hole: Nature’s Symphony

One of the park’s most iconic attractions, Thunder Hole, is a must-see. Located along the scenic Park Loop Road, Thunder Hole is where the ocean’s waves create a thunderous sound as they rush into a small inlet. The best time to visit is about two hours before high tide when the waves are most powerful. As the water crashes against the rocks, it forces air out of a narrow channel, producing a loud, thunder-like roar and sending sea spray high into the air. I ended up staying there for an hour just admiring the wonder of it all. The clangor is indescribable and something you must experience for yourself — it’s a thrilling spectacle that captures the raw power of the ocean in a roaring cove.

Beehive Loop: A Hiker’s Challenge

My personal favorite part of my visit, the Beehive Loop offers an exhilarating hiking experience. I would describe it as the easiest “intense” trail available at the park. While there are many more extreme trails, this one still offers plenty of thrills but without ever crossing the line (though my wife might beg to differ). This 1.4-mile trail is not for the faint of heart, as it features steep climbs and iron rungs to aid hikers over the more challenging sections. You’ll feel just like you’re in an old school pulp adventure story, climbing a cliff to beat other people to a secluded island treasure; well, at least that’s how I felt. One great part of this trail is it starts near the Sand Beach parking area, so you can knock out two birds with one stone. As for the trail itself, it quickly ascends, offering stunning views of the coastline and Frenchman Bay. The exposed cliffs and narrow ledges might seem daunting, but the panoramic vistas from the summit make it all worthwhile. Hikers should be prepared with good footwear, a head for heights, and a sense of adventure.

Cadillac Mountain: Sunrise Splendor

The first place I went to on my visit, no trip to Acadia National Park is complete without a visit to Cadillac Mountain. Standing at 1,530 feet, it is the highest point on the East Coast of the United States. This makes it one of the first places to see the sunrise in the country. Whether you drive up the scenic 3.5-mile Cadillac Summit Road (my choice) or hike one of the many trails leading to the top, the sunrise view is spectacular. Watching the first light of day illuminate the park natural beauty and the surrounding islands is a moment of pure magic. This mountain has my favorite view in the whole world.

Acadia National Park Camping

For those looking to fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Acadia, camping is the perfect option. While I didn’t go camping during my first visit there — I stayed at a local bed and breakfast — I’m planning my next trip there to be a camping one. The park offers several campgrounds, including Blackwoods, Seawall, and Schoodic Woods. Blackwoods is open May 3 through October 21, 2024, and provides easy access to many of the park’s main attractions, while Seawall is open May 22 through October 14, 2024, and offers a more secluded experience on the quieter western side of Mount Desert Island. Schoodic Woods, located on the Schoodic Peninsula, is open May 22 through October 14, 2024, and provides a peaceful retreat with fewer crowds and beautiful coastal scenery.

Tips for a Great Acadia National Park Camping Experience

  1. Plan Ahead: Campsites can fill up quickly, especially during peak season. Make reservations early — they become available to reserve two months in advance.
  2. Pack Smart: Bring appropriate gear for varying weather conditions. Layers are key, as temperatures can fluctuate. Even in the summer, Maine can get cold at night.
  3. Leave No Trace: Respect the park’s natural environment by following Leave No Trace principles. Pack out all trash and minimize your impact.
  4. Stay Safe: Be aware of wildlife and practice safe food storage. Always let someone know your plans and estimated return time.

Conclusion

Acadia National Park is my personal favorite park in the entire country, with some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the United States. There’s just no other place with this amazing fusion of beaches, mountains, islands, forests, vistas, and lakes. Add in all the unique natural attractions, like the thunderous waves at Thunder Hole and the awe-inspiring sunrise from Cadillac Mountain, and Acadia is a must-see destination for sure. So pack your gear, pitch your tent, and get ready to explore the wonders of Acadia National Park camping.
