Other than turkey season, spring bear hunting is arguably the biggest draw for hunters across North America this time of year. As the snow melts and bears emerge from hibernation, hunters head into the backcountry for a chance at one of the most thrilling and challenging hunts available. With seasons opening from March to June depending on the region, spring bear offers a mix of baited and spot-and-stalk opportunities, often in rugged, remote landscapes where glassing and patience pay off. If you’re looking to punch a tag this spring, here are five top spring bear hunting destinations in North America to consider:

Alaska: Alaska boasts the largest black bear population in the U.S., particularly along the southern coast near Homer, Kenai and Valdez. These areas offer high-density bear populations and the chance for unguided, boat-based hunts amidst stunning coastal scenery.

British Columbia: Vancouver Island is renowned for having the highest density of black bears in North America. Hunters here can experience classic spot-and-stalk hunts, especially effective during the salmon runs when bears are highly active.

Manitoba: Manitoba’s northern regions, particularly around Lake Winnipeg and within the Duck Mountains, are known for excellent spring bear hunting. The Duck Mountains, with their dense forests and rich agricultural areas, are a hot spot for trophy-sized and color-phase black bears, including chocolate, cinnamon, and blonde varieties. The Northern Interlake Region and the area near Riding Mountain National Park are also highly regarded for their large black bear populations and diverse color phases.

Idaho: Idaho offers over-the-counter tags, long seasons and a mix of bait, spot-and-stalk and even hunting with hounds, making it a go-to for DIY bear hunters. Vast public land access and healthy populations make it one of the most hunter-friendly bear destinations in the Lower 48.

Montana: Montana’s backcountry regions, including the Great Bear Wilderness, deliver a remote, no-frills bear hunting experience. Expect glassing sessions in high country basins and the chance at a mature boar under pristine, wild conditions.

Whether you’re looking for a coastal boat hunt or a backcountry spot-and-stalk adventure, spring bear season is wide open and calling.
