Father’s Day is a time to honor the bond between fathers and their children, and there’s no better way to celebrate than by sharing the great outdoors. At iSportsman, we believe in fostering a deep connection with nature, promoting recreational activities, and championing conservation efforts — values that align perfectly with those of Green Top Sporting Goods.
Green Top and iSportsman share a unique love for the outdoors, as well as a desire to inspire others to enjoy nature and conserve it for generations to come. We think that people have to continue to be outdoors, and teach our kids to enjoy it too.
In our debut episode of the iSportsman Podcast, we sit down with Hunter Brooks from Green Top to discuss how these shared values enhance our outdoor experiences and strengthen family traditions. Tune in to hear Hunter Brooks’ insights on the importance of outdoor recreation and conservation, and how Green Top Sporting Goods continues to inspire families to embrace the beauty and adventure of the natural world.
Father’s Day, celebrated on the third Sunday of June, has its roots in the early 20th century. The first known Father’s Day service was held in 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia, following a mining disaster that killed 362 men, many of whom were fathers. However, the holiday truly began to take shape thanks to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Inspired by the Mother’s Day celebration, Dodd sought to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children as a single parent. Her efforts led to the first statewide Father’s Day on June 19, 1910.
Despite early resistance and concerns about commercialization, focused around the domestication of manliness and fact that fathers often had to pay for the gifts their families gave them, Father’s Day gained national recognition. President Richard Nixon eventually signed it into law as a permanent national holiday in 1972.
For iSportsman and Green Top, the celebration of Father’s Day is more than a recognition of paternal bonds — it’s an opportunity to emphasize the invaluable lessons fathers can impart, especially the love for the outdoors. Fathers play a crucial role in instilling an appreciation for nature, fostering a sense of adventure, and encouraging conservation-mindedness in their children. Engaging in outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking, and camping strengthens family ties, promotes physical health, and teaches respect for the environment.
The positive effects of this are profound. Children who spend time outside with their fathers develop stronger problem-solving skills, gain a deeper understanding of ecosystems, and learn the importance of environmental stewardship. These shared experiences create lasting memories and instill lifelong values that transcend generations.
As we celebrate Father’s Day, let’s honor the dads who inspire us to embrace the great outdoors and carry forward a legacy of conservation and adventure.
