A new Apple TV series built around a hunting trip gone wrong has been shelved days before release after plagiarism accusations surfaced, a move that caught the attention of hunters who had been eyeing the show for its outdoors backdrop. The French-language thriller, titled The Hunt, was set to premiere Dec. 3 before Apple postponed it pending a review, according to reporting from WTHR.
Producers at Gaumont paused the rollout after claims that the show’s premise and characters were too similar to a 1973 novel by Douglas Fairbairn called Shoot and later adapted into the 1976 film of the same name. The story also centered on a violent encounter in the woods. WTHR reports that Gaumont issued a statement saying they will conduct a full assessment of the allegations before moving forward.
The series follows a group of friends on a hunting trip whose outing turns deadly when they cross paths with another group of hunters. The outdoor setting and tension-driven plot had drawn interest from viewers who enjoy wilderness thrillers and stories grounded in the fieldcraft and unpredictability of the hunt.
Apple has not announced a new release date, leaving the future of the series in limbo while the investigation continues.
