Aimpoint, one of the most recognized names in red dot optics, is marking 50 years in 2025 since the creation of its first red dot sight. What started in 1974 with a Swedish hunter’s idea for faster target acquisition turned into the company’s first optic a year later.

Aimpoint has since become a fixture for shooters worldwide. Its sights have been on hunting rifles in the woods, carbines on patrol and competition guns on the range. The company’s products are known for their ruggedness and ability to handle extremes of heat, cold and rough handling.

Aimpoint’s big breakthrough in the U.S. came in 1997 when it was awarded a contract to provide the U.S. Army with 100,000 Comp M sights known to soldiers as the M68 Close Combat Optic. That contract cemented its place in military history and led to more than 2 million optics being fielded by the U.S. Armed Forces. Today, military units, police agencies and shooters around the globe continue to use Aimpoint products. Their products are popular among hunters seeking a quality red dot with military-level precision and durability but without paying DoD prices.

Thane Smith, president of Aimpoint Inc. said 2025 is more than an anniversary—it is a chance to reflect on how the company’s technology has shaped shooting over the past five decades.

“As we celebrate throughout 2025, we are reminded of the legacy of innovation and commitment to the highest quality standards for providing optics to support every mission from personal protection to combat zones worldwide,” Smith said.
