Fort Drum offers a wealth of natural resources for those interested in foraging wild edibles such as fruit, mushrooms, ramps/leeks, asparagus, fiddleheads, dandelions, and rhubarb. However, it’s important to adhere to specific guidelines to ensure the sustainability of these resources and to respect the environment.
Harvesting of fruit, mushrooms, ramps/leeks, asparagus, fiddleheads, dandelions, and rhubarb is permitted on Fort Drum but strictly for personal use. It’s essential to remember that these natural treasures are not to be harvested for commercial purposes.
While general digging on Fort Drum is prohibited, minor digging to remove mushrooms, ramps, and leeks is allowed. This exception is granted solely for the purpose of foraging these specific items. It’s crucial to exercise caution and restraint to minimize environmental impact while foraging.
Cutting, digging up, removing, or defacing trees is not permitted under any circumstances. Additionally, removing live vegetation, except for the specified edibles mentioned earlier, is strictly prohibited. Planting seeds or any vegetation for any purpose whatsoever is prohibited on Fort Drum. This regulation ensures the integrity of the native flora and fauna and prevents the introduction of invasive species.
